Come to Dane Certificate’s Magic Bar for a night of magic, popcorn, booze and Walter Hill’s magnificent 1981 action/thriller, Southern Comfort. Set in the early ’70s in the swamps of Louisiana, it follows the exploits of a group of bumpkin National Guardsmen as they incur the wrath of the local cajuns while deep in foreign territory on a weekend wargames excercise. Starring Keith Carradine and the stone-faced Powers Boothe (both later in ‘Deadwood’, which Walter Hill co-produced), it follows a vaguely Samurai theme which Hill also pursued in his 1979 classic, ‘The Warriors’: the noble warriors fighting their way through hostile grounds to an imagined safety. It’s a gritty, visceral picture with an ace Ry Cooder score, the last half-hour of screen time being a real nail-biter. But don’t sweat it: more than anything, Southern Comfort is FUN to watch.
Dane Certificate will perform a magic show at 8:00 (this is always worth seeing), followed by the film. The venue itself is one of the secret treats of the inner north: a bar, a cinema, a band venue, a theatre of magic.
Entry is $5, the booze is cheap and the fun is on us. Hope to see you there!
Oh, and the choice of film is c/o Dave Lang (yeah, that guy).
